5 Reasons Why Couples Who Sweat Together, Stay Together

Have you ever considered how physical fitness can benefit not only your own health and well-being, but also that of your significant other? There are two types of people in this world: the ones who make exercising an important part of their everyday lives and the ones who do not. Which one are you? Which one is your partner?

When you’re not in a relationship, you can be either one of the above-mentioned types of people without it in any way impacting your mindset, but when you’re in a relationship, it becomes very obvious.

How about you grab your partner’s hand and gently ask him or her to be your workout partner? There is a great amount of evidence that suggests that couples who sweat together, actually really do stay together.

There are a plethora of reasons why working out with your partner could enhance your relationship; however, I chose five that I believe stand out the most:

1. It will help you achieve your fitness goals. When partners care about fitness—their own and their partner’s—it becomes easier to achieve fitness goals. A recent study of heterosexual couples showed that average-weight husbands who care about fitness engage in more physical activity when their wives offer more supportive health-related comments (Skoyen, Blank, Corkery, & Butler, 2013). Sharing in the ups and downs of a daily morning walk, a challenging bike ride, or a high energy Zumba class, can provide the perfect context for such comments. Warning: Don’t rely too heavily on your partner when it comes to your own fitness goals. “Outsourcing” the mental effort required to complete fitness goals can reduce your own effort (Fitzsimons & Finkel, 2011).

2. It gives you guaranteed Quality Time
When life, kids and jobs get in the way, it can be hard to set aside alone time for you and your partner. However, if you’re prioritize your workouts, you can have them already built into your schedule as “appointments” with yourself that you can’t break. So… if you’re already making time in your day to work out, why not do it together? Exercising together means built-in quality time during the day, and more quality time helps keep your relationship extremely healthy.

3. Your sex life will definitely benefit!
Need I say more?

4. Your partner encourages you to get off your butt

Many time’s people are just having a day where the last thing they want to do is expend any energy at all. Your partner would well aware of this feeling and therefore would understand the best way to fix it is by doing the exact thing you don’t want to do.

5. Can increase your emotional bond. When you exercise together, you create a situation in which you can coordinate your actions. For instance, you might sync your walking or running pace with your partner’s or even lift weights using the same rhythm. Such behavior creates nonverbal matching, or mimicry, which benefits you both (Stel & Vonk, 2010). Nonverbal mimicry helps people feel emotionally attuned with one another, and those who experience or engage in it tend to report greater feelings of having “bonded” with their partner. Working out together provides an opportunity to create such connection that would benefit both your relationship and your health.

Bottom line, your fitness goals can be about you, or it can be about you and your partner, so why not share these goals and aspect of your life, either regularly or just on occasion, and observe how doing so might give your relationship a higher quality and new life…..TOGETHER!
